Rina Sawayama is a Japanese-born British singer and songwriter. She first came to prominence as the winner of the sixth season of the UK reality show The X Factor in 2013, where she was mentored by Simon Cowell. Sawayama released her debut album, “Who Needs Words”, in 2014 and followed it up with the EP “Rina” in 2016.

Sawayama was born in Tokyo, Japan. Her mother, Keiko Sawayama, is from Japan, and her father, Masato Sawayama, is from the United Kingdom. She moved to the UK at age five with her family.

The group released their debut single “Watashi no Angel” in 2007 and followed it up with their self-titled album later that year.

Her notable awards include Best Newcomer at the 18th Japan Academy Prize, Rookie of The Year at The Asia Film Awards, and Outstanding Performance by an Actress in a Television Series at The Golden Globe Awards.
