Joel Kim Booster was born in South Korea and emigrated to the United States in his early twenties. He earned a bachelor’s degree from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and a Juris Doctor from Northwestern Law School.

After law school, he clerked for Judge Richard Posner of the Seventh Circuit Court of Appeals.

He then practiced law in Chicago, where he specialized in immigration law. In 2007, he was appointed an Assistant United States Attorney for the Northern District of Illinois. In 2012, he was promoted to Deputy United States Attorney for that district.

He is currently the Acting United States Attorney for that district. Mr. Booster has been recognized by both the Chicago Sun-Times and Chicago Tribune as one of the top lawyers in Illinois.
